The pinballs in the cinema | Pinball house

02/10/2018 By Pinballhouse

I do not know about you, but every time I watch a movie or series and a pinball comes out, I can not even blink until I guess the machine model that it is.

Today, I’m going to do the opposite. Let’s get to know all the pinball machines based on successful movies.

The fever for commercial licenses encouraged the players to begin to adore even more «the machines of the million». It was a great impulse to encourage the game in these machines. Likewise, the designers themselves were inspired by the characters, places or other characteristics related to the films to fill the board of designs and accessories that made the player enjoy, even more, the experiences with pinballs.

Next, I leave you a list with the film-based machines:

1. Star Wars.

Pinball house poster

Manufactured by Sega Pinball in March 1997. Stern and Williams also have their own models.

2. Austin Power.

Austin power poster

It was in 2001 when Stern decided to acquire the license to make a pinball related to the fictional English spy.

3. James Bond.

James Bond poster.

Agent 007 had his porpia pinball thanks to Gottlieb for the 80s.

4. Drácula.

Dracula poster

The most famous vampire of all time had his own pinball machine thanks to Williams in 1993.

5. Jurasicc Park.

Jurassic Park poster

Manufactured by Data East in 1993 with a production of 9008 machines.

6. Flash Gordon.

Flash Gordon poster

Bally Manufacturing Corporation introduced its machine in February 1981 with a production of 10,000 units.

7. Demolition Man.

Demolition Man poster

In 1994 Williams Electronics Games presented Demolition Man. Designed by Dennis Nordman with image and sound of Jon Hey.

8. Independence day.

The most famous alien invasion in history has its own pinball since 1996 thanks to Sega Pinball.

These are some of the many pinball related movies. In addition, there are other models like Batman Forever, The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Space Jam, Avatar, Lost in Space, Godzilla, Terminator 2, The Addams Family, The Shadow, The Hobbit, Rocky, Pirates of the Caribbean or Elvira, the queen of darkness.

If you notice another model, leave me a comment!

Attack Pinball

As you can see, the base game was manufactured by Bally but the rest of the updates have been made by Chicago Gaming Company. Being always the game designer Brian Eddy.

Game.

Earth is invaded by Martians. To save it, the player must defend all the major cities and kill the Martians. Later, it must end with the Planet Mars.

  • Super Jets: score a specific number of hits on the pop bumpers to turn Super Jets (with a value of 3 million points per hit).
  • 5-way combo: complete consecutive shots (each within a time interval) through any illuminated loop or ramps in a specific combination to obtain a large bonus.
  • Super Jackpot: During the multiball, complete five jackpot shots to turn on the Super Jackpot, which alternates continuously around each of the five jackpot locations.
  • Martian Multiball: Destroy the four Martians during «Martian Attack» to start Martian Multiball.
  • Total Annihilation: erase the four shots in loop and ramp to start this four-ball mode.
  • Conquer Mars: defend the main cities and fly to Mar.

Illumination.

Attack from Mars features all LED lighting which means you may have to never replace a light bulb again. Painstaking efforts were made to replicate warmth and feel of incandescent bulbs. The software controls the speed at which the LEDs reach full brightness to emulate the relatively slow ramps up and down of light produced by incandescent bulbs.

Gabinete.

The game’s cabinetry has been greatly improved. Both the cabinet and backbox are manufactured with melamine clad plywood. Melamine is 10 times more scratch resistant than traditional lacquer finishes. The original fiberboard cabinet bottom has been replaced with a ½” plywood bottom – significantly improving the strength of the cabinet and providing added protection for the cashbox.

90’s in the pinballs

05/09/2018 By Pinballhouse

Today, I wanted to share with you one of the best decades for pinball machines. THE DECADE OF THE 90!

Every good fan of pinball machines knows, that some time ago, they occupied a privileged place in the places where they were. They were machines that shone (and still do) with their own light.

Subsequently, they suffered their worst period. In the 90s, we can say that pinball machines are resurfacing again. That is why, from my humblest and sincere opinion, I think that in this time the best models of pinballs were designed.

10 pinballs from 90´s.

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1992).

The highlight of this pinball was the appearance of the monster in the form of a hologram on the back of the pinball machine. As a curiosity, this machine lacked copyright, so one of its creators, introduced instead of Richard Carlson to his father.

Creature from the black lagoon.

The Addams Family (1992).

We can not talk about the 90s without mentioning the best-selling pinball in history. Its main characteristic resides in a flipper that can not be controlled by the player, if not that it was programmed to move by itself.

The Addams Family
Twilight Zone (1993).

It was the first pinball made in the 90s. This game is part of the widebody line of WMS games. It was first released in 1993 by Midway (under the Balli label).

Twilight Zone is currently the highest rated electronic pinball machine of all time in the Internet Pinball Machine database.

Twilight zone
Star Trek: The Net Generación (1993).

You have to overcome 7 missions to reach the final. You could play up to 6 balls simultaneously. It is the only pinball machine that presents three lists of separate highscores.

Star Trek
Indiana Jones: The Pinball Aventure (1993).

In the early 90’s, Indiana Jones arrived. It is a pinball to which I have special affection, it was the first with which I played with Pinball mouse. His gun to get the balls caught my attention.

It features sound clips from the first three films, and actor John Rhys-Davies (repeating his role as Sallah) provided a new discourse for the game. It was the first pinball to use the DCS sound system.

They were manufactured 12716 units.

Indiana Jones

Theatre of Magic (1995).

The game uses the DCS sound system. It was manufactured by Midway, holding the right flipper and then pressing Start, revealing Mortal Kombat attacks. 6,600 units were manufactured.

Tales of the Arabian Nights (1996).

First and only pinball based on Hindu themes. 3,128 units were manufactured. It is based on The Thousand and One Nights, where players can experience 7 Tales of the Arabian Nights that include a tour of the ancient city of Baghdad, fly with the magic carpet and fight against the evil genius. Rubbing the magic lamp evokes good geniuses who help rescue the princess. The game uses a vertical magnet deviator that grabs the ball and throws it to the player to have more suspense as a first industry. The game also includes spikes that get up and save the ball when the shooting stars are summoned.

Medieval Madness (1997).

It was released by Williams in June 1997. Designed by Brian Eddy and programmed by Lyman Sheats, it had a production of 4,016 units.

One of the main objectives of the game is to «destroy» six castles by hitting the entrance of the castle with the pinball.

Medieval Madness

Cirqus Voltaire (1997)His game was to find nine ¨marvels¨ and get the description of the word circus. The most notable feature is the master of ceremonies, a head that rises at certain times and makes cracks against the player.

Monster Bash (1998)

Another machine of monsters, but with licenses of all the characters. Its most special feature was that if the flippers moved several times before throwing the ball and hit at a fixed point, the music was played accompanied by the voice of the programmer.

And you… Would you include any other pinball?

Correct tilting of pinball machines.

29/08/2018 By Pinballhouse

Leveling a pinball machine is not an easy task. Although it seems an insignificant procedure, the inclination of the pinball is very important to enjoy the game as it directly influences the speed of the ball.

To get an idea, a ball has a diameter of about 3 cm. and weighs about 80 grams. Due to its characteristics, it can reach a speed of up to 145km / h. The inclination of the pinball influences the speed in which the game is played.

The optimal tilt of a pinball machine is usually set between 6 and 7 degrees. In some cases, manufacturers recommend that the inclination does not exceed 6.5 degrees.

To make a correct inclination of the pinball machine, it is necessary to take into account:

  • Measure the inclination directly on the table, not on the glass.

The slope of the pinball crystal varies depending on the elements that make up the board.

Stern machines: between the two black lines.

"<yoastmark

Bally / Williams machines: between the 1st and 2nd line.

"<yoastmark

  • Leveling block nuts are mounted below the legs, not on top.

Mounted underneath they contribute to increase the rigidity of the legs, above they would only hinder.

Steps to make a correct inclination according to Stern:

1. Start with the four levelers at the bottom (very steep levelers make the pinball less stable and the legs «suffer» more).

2. Look at the level that is in the lower right part of the lane to take out the ball.

3. Adjust the front or back levelers until the bubble is between the two black lines, that slope is about 6.5

4. To level the pinball from side to side let roll a ball through the center of the board to see if it tends to deviate, adjust with the levelers to eliminate any deviation.

The prohibition of pinball machines | Pinball house

22/08/2018 By Pinballhouse

All fans of pinball machines can enjoy them in their clubs with their friends, in different places of leisure and even in their own homes. But, do you think this has always been the case?

Pinball machines were banned from the 1940s to the 1970s in the major cities of the United States, coinciding with those where the game was invented, such as Chicago, Los Angeles or New York.

Reasons for the prohibition.

– Pinball is a game of chance. The flippers were not invented until a few years after the prohibition. So the players hit and tipped the machine to direct the trajectory and gravity of the ball.

–  Many «legislators» believed that pinball machines were related to the mafia.

– They were stealing American children. Many schoolchildren invested their ten cents in enjoying the game of these machines, which for many, was a waste of time.

– Mayor Fiorello La Guardia told the police that his main job was to destroy all the pinball machines and arrest their owners. For this reason, the game of pinballs was disputed in hiding.

Destruction pinball machines

May 15, 1940: Urban F. Emme, chief clerk of City Marshal’s office, welds sledge hammer on confiscated pinball and other marble machines ordered destroyed by Municipal Court judges. This photo was published in the May 16, 1940 Los Angeles Times.

– During the War, like all the American industry, the factories of the United States were destined to the production of weapons, so the production of pinballs was significantly reduced.

End of the ban.

In 1976 the pinball machines became legal again. Roger Sharpe, showed that pinball was not a game of chance, but skill (one of the reasons why pinballs were prohibited). For this and in a situation of tension in which he was surrounded by the press, political positions and a game that he did not dominate, he knew how to get out and achieve what years ago others, had forbidden, the legality of pinballs.

Roger Sharpe

In spite of everything, there are currently places where it is still not possible to play pinballs:

  • In Nashville, where children under 18 are totally prohibited from playing with pinball machines.
  • Ocean City (New Jersey) where on Sundays exclusively, you can not enjoy these fantastic machines.
